Many survivors struggle with addiction in one way or another. It's a way to cope with pain, or to avoid feeling that pain
altogether. If only it worked - but addictions bring their own problems and heal nothing.
Our addictions tend to develop as a way of coping with the echoes of our child abuse - a form of defence again pain that we
cannot bear - or cannot bear to face. Compulsions and obsessions of many sorts are our way of numbing the pain or keeping
us too preoccupied to think of it. Even the workaholic, while lauded by society, is often one of us, desperately busy to keep
deeper issues at bay.
